Who doesn’t desire a glamorous, beautiful Hollywood smile? Everyone does. Unfortunately, nature has not gifted all of us with white, straight and nice teeth. But today it doesn’t seem to be a great problem any more. Porcelain veneers have been invented to correct nature’s mistakes.
Porcelain veneers are thin laminates or shells of tooth-colored material (ceramic, porcelain, composite bonding material) that are “cemented” to the front surface of teeth. They’re made by a dental technician, usually in a dental lab, working from a model provided by your dentist. Basically dental veneers are for teeth what false finger nails are for hands.
Porcelain veneers are used to recover stained teeth that can’t be improved by teeth whitening or prophyflex treatments, damaged teeth that can either become badly worn with excessive grinding and carbonated drinks or teeth that have been chipped and badly broken. They are also great for gaps between your teeth, which are easily closed or “filled” by dental veneers.
Porcelain veneers are used for crooked teeth too. Although it can’t be considered the best choice for crooked teeth, it sometimes can be a great help for not severely crooked ones. When used for this purpose porcelain veneers are called “instant orthodontics” as you have the same result in a short amount of time.
Porcelain veneers are the most long-lasting of veneers: they last between 5-10 years. After that your veneers will surely need to be replaced. In spite of the fact that the veneers are strongly glued to your teeth they may sometimes come loose and fall off. In this case you must keep the fallen veneer and contact your dentist. In order to avoid such incidents follow daily hygiene practices and visit your doctor regularly.
Your dentist may recommend that you avoid some foods and drinks such as coffee, tea or red wine that might either stain or discolor your veneers. Of course it may seem difficult, but for many people the results are really worth the sacrifice.
Indeed, porcelain veneers look wonderful and amazing, but don’t hurry to make a decision. Talk to your dentist first.
