Real Looking Models

ModelsPerceptions of beauty and whether society accepts them are constantly changing. Once being plump was considered a sign of beauty for models, then it was being slender. Now the criteria appears to be changing once again with the public reportedly eager to see more “normal” looking models who resemble people you might see in real life.

Dictionary.com defines a model “whose profession is posing for artists or photographers.” However, over the years, the definition has changed, or rather been extended, in its meaning. The word model is used with descriptive adjectives as slim, tall and gorgeous, but is it true nowadays?

Newsweek Magazine reports that “real-looking models” are now shining in fashion shows.

Now real people are even strutting the catwalk—the swimwear company Lycra plucked 20 women of all shapes and sizes off the beach to model their suits at last year’s Miami Swim Fashion Week.

It also quotes Simon Rogers, the head of Ugly New York, a casting agency for “real”-looking models, commenting on this new trend.

“I definitely think there’s some backlash amongst people who see fashion shows, then read stories about how the models have to smoke themselves to death and only drink lemon water for six weeks.People would like to see somebody up there who reflects how people on the street really look.”

An expert in the field, Amy Larocca, the editor of “Look Book,” explains the new trend.

“Fashion shows used to be for a very small number of people, very exclusive. Now you can see them an hour later on the Internet. Everyone can be involved. Larocca also links the increased accessibility of fashion to the number of high-end designers creating affordable lines for mass-market stores, such as Isaac Mizrahi’s collection for Target, as well as reality shows such as “Project Runway.”

Back in skinny jeans also states that people nowadays care about models’ health rather than their appearance.

If the woman still looks like she’s only had lemon water with cayenne pepper to eat for 6 weeks, then she’s still starving herself for fashion, and none of us want to see that any more. We don’t care about a model’s fashion look, we care about her health.

The Bob Is Back into Fashion

admin | Beauty News, Celebrities, Fashion News, General, Hairdressing, Models, Pop Stars, Style | Friday, 18 January 2008

Bob cutThe Bob hairstyle is back in fashion again. Katie Holmes and Rhianna have bobs.

The Trendhunter Magazine reports that fashionistas are lining up at salons on the coast to get the haircut that is once again considered sophisticated, fun, and flirty, all in one style.

Red Carpet Victim examines the origin of the bob.

The bob arose in the 1920s out of a sense of rebellion as women chopped their previously long, luxurious locks and struggled to gain independence and equality with men. Louise Brooks […] was the first big name to sport the look, but it has never entirely gone away. Anna Wintour (right), editrix of Vogue, has worn the look for years.

Bellasugar states that this short, chic style especially flatters those with round and square face shapes.

Following the example of some celebrities, West End Artgirl says that not only does she like this hairstyle trend very much, but she is also willing to change her hair style as a result.

I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this latest trend in hairstyles. It’s THE BOB. Hopefully, the days of the mile long wavy weave is behind us and the time for more edgier cuts and flirty bangs are here. In fact, I’m thinking about giving my locks a rest and getting a Chinese Bob wig to rock with the celebs who are definitely putting more ‘bang’ in their style this season.

admin | Beauty News, Celebrities, Fashion News, General, Glamor, Media, Models, Style | Wednesday, 26 December 2007

Giesele BundchenBrazilian supermodel Giesele Bundchen, who Forbes magazine says earns more than anyone in her industry, is at the top of a growing list of rich people. Bundchen is not only rich but she is also smart. The model now demands that her payments not be made using the U.S. dollar.

The world’s richest supermodel joins many major investors who are putting their funds in Euros instead of the shrinking U.S. dollar. According to Bumpshack.com, the dollar is at an all-time low against almost all of the major foreign currencies.

Bloomberg.com quotes Anne Nelson, Bundchen’s agent in New York as saying, `

`Gisele has contracts in dollars.” […] “When she works in Europe she gets paid in euros, when she works in the U.S. she gets paid in dollars, when she works in Brazil she gets paid in reais, and so on and so forth.”

Even though economy analysts expect the US Dollar currency to increase in the following months, let’s hope that Bundchen won’t cancel her recent contracts! Also see Bundchen by Dolce & Gabbana — Spring Wear Line.

Anorexia-By-Super-Thin-Models Controversy

Models From AnorexiaAccording to recent scientific research, anorexia may be caused by inherited differences in the way the brain of the sufferer operates which results in obsessive behavior.

A team of psychiatrists, led by Walter Kaye of the University of Pittsburgh, questions the long-standing belief that images of arguably unhealthily thin stars in the media encourages anorexic behavior in impressionable young women.

According to MedicineNet.com, “anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to simply as anorexia, is a condition that goes beyond out-of-control dieting. A person with anorexia initially begins dieting to lose weight. Over time, the weight loss becomes a sign of mastery and control.

PaleReflections-The EatingDisorder Support Community refers to the anorexia statistics, reported by the National Eating Disorders Association, saying that as many as ten million females and 1 million men are fighting an eating disorder and that 80 percent of American women are reportedly unhappy with their appearance.

The researchers tested the emotional responses of 13 former anorexics compared with those of 13 nonsufferers. The women were asked to play a computer game where correct guesses were rewarded financially. During the test, the team used functional MRI scans to monitor the participants’ brain activity by measuring blood levels in certain areas. Among the 13 non sufferers, the brain region connected to emotional responses showed strong differences between winning and losing the game. Among the women with anorexia disease, alas, there was little difference in activity between winning and losing.

The team-leader Kaye comments on the results of the test stating:

“What this points to is that anorexics have something different going on in their brains, which marks them out as having either different structures in the brain or different pathways for processing thought that stay with them for life. We may be able, with a lot of hard work, to get them back to eating, but deep down in their brain there appear to be biological differences that don’t go away.”

In addition, Jackie Danicki from Beauty is a form of genius–Oscar Wilde quotes Dr Ian Frampton, a psychologist at Exeter University, as saying:

You would expect a lot more anorexics than we currently have if it was down to advertising and peer pressure and images of famous models like Kate Moss. These youngsters have something going on in their brain that is different.

Most Fab Designer of 2007

admin | Beauty News, Fashion News, General, Glamor, Media, Models, Style | Wednesday, 19 December 2007

LanvinIt has been known recently that Fab’s final vote goes to Alber Elbaz for Lanvin. Both of his two collections, Fall and Spring, were absolutely fabulous.

The FABSUGAR blog presents other contestants, commenting on their presented collections in some details.

I present to you the candidates for Most Fab Designer of 2007. Chanel is a crowd pleaser and red carpet stunner. Karl continues to reinvent the house, for both ready-to-wear and haute couture, and the accessories inspire and intrigue. Balenciaga, led by wünderkind Nicolas Ghesquière, is edgy, innovative, and a leader of the pack. The piped blazers from the Fall collection launched a thousand look-a-likes, and now Ikat prints are all the rage. Roberto Cavalli is a designer with gusto, one who doesn’t follow the trends and always stays true to form — sexy, colorful, and glittering party looks. His collection for H&M was possibly one of the most coveted H&M designer collections yet. […] Lastly, the young and restless Alexander Wang. He’s the BFF of models and Hollywood darlings. His streetwise style appeals to cool trendsetters.

In earlier posts, the blogger behind FABSUGAR says that Elbaz’s collection has captured his heart.

Lanvin concluded Paris and what a grande finale it was. While the rest of the collection was magically inventive, and wonderfully wearable, these jewel-toned party frocks stole my heart. Words can’t describe the sensations these fabric creations arouse in me.

Elbaz’s Complete Lanvin collection is presented at Style.com.

We wish best of luck to Elbaz and his voters in the forthcoming year too!
